I work at sea, and am looking to buy a digital camera to take on my next trip. Obviously I’m going to try my best to keep my camera out of harm’s way, but there’s always the chance of spray, dust, varied temperatures and the increased possibility of me dropping it. How would an average compact camera cope with these?

I’m tempted by the Olympus shockproof/waterproof cameras, but I’m wondering if they’re overkill? I’m not going to be throwing it around or going underwater… I just want a decent all-round camera that won’t break easily.
Thanks for the suggestion, but I’ve already looked at lots of review sites. They always recommend Olympus cameras for “extreme” use, but they’re not so specific on how extreme the conditions should be before ruling out standard digicams…

I’m just wondering whether they can resist the occasional splash, or changing temperatures.

For example the little Canon Powershot A470 and A480 models from around 2 or 3 Years ago used to produce stunning perfect quality images (For a point and shoot camera anyway) They were 7MP and 10 MP cameras.
I was looking at some images taken with today’s Canon powershot A3300 which is a 16 MP point and shoot camera. The quality of the images were…Lets just say poor when next to the Canon A480 10 MP camera.
So back to my question..Will the images taken with digital cameras keep getting worse as the manufactures keep adding more unnecessary pixels on there cameras
A message to the manufactures…. STOP CRAMMING MORE PIXELS ONTO THE SENSOR OF CAMERAS…..THEY DO NOT NEED ANY MORE PIXELS FOR GODS SAKE!!!!
I do NOT need to make a print the size of a football field..
First answer…The more pixels the better the image quality……WTF!!!!!!
What about lens quality and the size of the sensor at the back of the camera.
Full frame sensor cameras like the Canon 5D MK2 can handle 20+ MP ..WHY??? Because it has a large Sensor at the back that is approx 16 times the area size of a point and shoot camera.

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) June 28, 2011

The on-going debate over whether to end red-light camera systems in Los Angeles has spurred on California legal company TicketKick to take a serious look at the future of photo enforcement in other cities in California. According to the LA Times, The LA Police Commission voted unanimously in June to end the red-light camera program, putting the city in the center of a widespread debate over the purpose of the program and the effectiveness of the cameras in preventing accidents. The city’s contract with American Traffic Solutions, the red-light camera company, is set to expire at the end of July unless the LA City Counsel can receive enough votes to renew the contract.

Several bills in previous years have proposed to restrict or end camera systems statewide but failed to gain traction including AB 1008 which failed passage in 2011. Many California cities have already banned or ended their use of red-light cameras including Anaheim, Fresno, Long Beach, and Fullerton, just to name a few.

Recently, Napa County has been under fire for their red-light camera use when a Napa County Superior Judge ruled them illegal because the contract between Napa and the red-light camera company, Redflex, included a cost-neutrality clause which indirectly ties the amount of tickets issued to the amount of payment that Redflex receives from the city. According to Judge Diane Price in a Napa Valley Register article, State law prohibits that a contract between a governmental agency and a private company include a provision for payment based on the number of citations generated.

TicketKick knows this issue with cost-neutrality all too well, and has used it in written defenses for their customers in Napa and every other city who also maintains this clause in their contract. TicketKick’s founder and President, Greg Muender says that up to 50% of cities who utilize red-light camera systems have this cost-neutrality clause in their contract with the camera company. Unfortunately, that doesn’t necessarily mean an automatic dismissal because whether or not this cost-neutrality clause falls under the state guidelines as being illegal or not is entirely up to the judge’s interpretation. Some judges see it as illegal and others don’t.

Los Angeles is one of the cities whose contract with American Traffic Solutions does not include this cost-neutrality clause in their contract. However, according to LA Times, it is costing the city to keep issuing tickets, because more and more tickets are going unpaid. Mr. Muender of TicketKick added- It’s one of those, damned if you do, damned if you don’t situations where if you’re financially on top like Napa, your contract is deemed illegal because of the cost-neutrality clause, but look at LA, they don’t have that clause in their contract, but they’re losing money.

What could be the future of red-light cameras in California? TicketKick predicts they won’t last forever. We think within five years the law will be drastically changed and you just won’t see them anymore, at least in California. I think our state will come up with better solutions to reduce the number of accidents at intersections, if that’s the goal, of course. Greg said. Regardless, there will always be a need to provide a low cost, self-help legal service for traffic ticket defense, whether it be for red light tickets from a camera or an officer, or perhaps even speed cameras in the future. Who knows, but we’ll be here, he continued.

TicketKick is a registered Legal Document Assistant in California, providing self-help services in traffic ticket defense, with a similar service model to companies such as LegalZoom and E*Trade. TicketKick works with attorneys in California in developing their defenses, which utilize comprehensive arguments and tactics. TicketKicks goal is to help people get their traffic tickets dismissed, and although not every customer will win their case, TicketKick offers a refund of their defense fee for most violations if their customers are found guilty. TicketKick representatives can be reached at (800) 580-1902, at http://www.ticketkick.com, or at questions(at)ticketkick(dot)com.

Enfield, CT (PRWEB) April 1, 2011
Precision Camera & Video Repair, Inc. of Enfield, CT operates in the ever changing world of consumer electronics. By continuously and proactively adapting to the market place, the company continues to refine itself to meet the challenges of our segment. The recession had a major financial impact on our customers, who are comprised of many of the large CE retailers and all of Digital Camera manufacturers. Precision Camera adapted to their needs by expanding and providing cost effective service solutions.
As the product category continues to evolve our company has reshaped itself to keep pace with these changes which in turn resulted in changes to our service strategies and service offerings. Precision Camera has progressed through a transition that involved increasing repair capacity in some facilities and changing the allocation of product based on capabilities in others.
To meet the needs of our Digital Imaging customers we have increased the size and scope of our offerings. The price points of digital cameras have come down drastically over the last few years, to meet and adapt to this market change we have increased our capabilities surrounding high volume product refurbishment and the rapid exchange business model. This business is well suited for our South West facilities which have been in operation for the last 3 to 4 years.
Our Enfield, CT facilities remain well suited for the break/fix depot repair business model which works well with high-price-point products such as professional Digital SLRs, professional Lenses and Video Camcorders. We have technicians, operators, parts inventory personnel, repair support, project management, customer service, program management, finance, information technology, human resources and shipping personnel all in Enfield to support these products as well as all of our facilities. Our CEO, CFO, IT Director, VP of Operations and Director of Sales all reside in the towns around Enfield.
To meet the needs of our customers we now operate two large US facilities in El Paso, TX and one in the state of Chihuahua, MX (our Agave facility). The facility in Mexico was setup to handle the expansion of our international business in Mexico and Central America. Our El Paso area facilities are strategically located to handle the Western US logistics and service operations.
Our plan to optimize all of our facilities began about one year ago and we are now at the end point of the plan. Our Enfield, CT facility is functioning in three buildings and remains our Center of Excellence, with our Technicians and Operations functions working out of our Buildings 1 and 9. Building 7 houses our customer contact center, finance, IT and our HR staff.
Due to the competitive nature of our business we cannot be specific on employee counts but we still have a large number of people employed on the Enfield Campus. We have also transitioned a great number of people to our Southwest facilities. The Company helped with the relocation and virtually all have stayed with the Company. Every employee was given the opportunity to work at our Southwest facilities over the last year.
About Precision Camera: Precision Camera is the market leader in digital camera and video camcorder repair.
Rokonkoma, NY (PRWEB) April 22, 2009
HD Communications Corp., a company with expertise in wireless communications dating back to 1976, has introduced a series of unlicensed professional long range wireless video links that start at just $299 for a single-camera wireless link. By using any IP outdoor PoE (Power over Ethernet) camera and connecting it to one the new wireless video links HD Communications has developed, surveillance cameras can now be installed in remote locations. Installing surveillance cameras in remote locations previously required installing a fiber or wireless link to that location. The cost to install those links often reached into the thousands of dollars, which prevented many people from installing cameras where they required them. We now have made those installations possible with our low-cost, high-quality wireless video links requiring only 120 VAC at the remote location, said Don Davis, President and CEO of HD Communications Corp.
These are complete wireless video links that only require the installer to add IP/PoE surveillance cameras to obtain a 2-4 miles wireless video link between two locations. The HD27183 and the HD27184 are the two basic models, however the HD27184 upgrades from a one-camera solution to a four-camera solution. The HD27183 is a 2.4 GHz wireless link and the HD27184 is a dual band 2.4/5.8 GHz wireless link. While wireless video links are not new, what is new is the price point that HD Communications has introduced these wireless video links. We have complete turn-key solutions for one to four cameras, starting at $299 for the single-camera solution and $569 for a four-camera solution, Davis said.
The market is ripe for this solution as the cost of IP cameras continues to drop and the average cost of a quality outdoor IP/PoE camera is now around $650 versus this time last year when they averaged about $1100. Adding the cost of their HD27183 wireless video link to the cost of a $650 outdoor IP camera, you have a long-range wireless camera solution for less than $1000. The same solution from other wireless vendors, until now, was $2500 to $4500 plus the cost of an IP camera, Davis added. Many of those solutions were also at 900 MHz and, while good for penetration through trees and objects, could not deliver high quality video over great distance. The HD27183 and HD27184 series both require line-of-sight and, depending on how many cameras are attached to the link, will then determine the achievable distance from one location to another. Three to four mile links are achievable with good quality video when a single camera is used and one to two mile links when a location has three to four cameras connected to the HD27184-4, Davis stated.
When asked whose cameras HD Communications was recommending Davis stated,We work with several camera manufacturers and, while we do not sell the cameras, we do try to point the installer in the right direction by recommending known surveillance cameras that other installers have used with our wireless video links during our beta testing period. The company also offers a free design service to help dealers and installers select the right solution and products for their project.
Both the HD27183 and the HD27184 series are currently available for purchase directly from their website,http://www.wirelessnetworkproducts.com, and also through authorized dealers and installers. Dealers and installers should contact the company for further information regarding becoming an authorized dealer or installer.
Davis is extremely excited about these new products and how they will be received in the market. With the down-turn in the economy individuals, companies, schools, hospitals, hotels, shopping malls, state and local governments are cutting spending and looking for the lowest-cost solutions. That may lead to people settling for inferior solutions and products. I am excited that this company can delivery both low-cost solutions as well as high-quality products.

By using any IP outdoor PoE (Power over Ethernet) camera and connecting it to one the new wireless video links HD Communications has developed, surveillance cameras can now be installed in remote locations. Installing surveillance cameras in remote locations previously required installing a fiber or wireless link to that location. The cost to install those links often...
